Kendall's service takes him from his Connecticut home to the wilderness of Lake Champlain and his base at Mount Independence. Here, he experiences the challenges of a soldier of the eighteenth century with disease, deadly accidents, dangerous environs, and a poor diet. Kendall's unit also becomes engaged in British General John Burgoyne's invasion of 1777 and the turning-point battles of Saratoga.
